Bailey, The Barking Basset of Benton County Page 3

By Theresa Vann

Bailey barked at Theresa when she came out to do chores. "That's funny," said Theresa. "That bush is barking at me." She looked more closely. "That's Bailey in the bush. And look at that hole he's dug!"

Bailey agreed. It was a wonderful hole. Theresa shook her head as she fed the horses. "At least he can't get killed there. That is, as long as Nancy doesn't see him."

Theresa left after doing the afternoon chores. "Kate and Matt will be back soon," she said to the dogs as she gave them their treats. "Be good." And the dogs waited in the long summer afternoon for Matt and Kate to come back. No human can wait like a dog can wait. A dog can wait as long as it takes. But this wait was longer than Theresa had said. As the dogs waited, the sunlight spread across the big front lawn and gradually faded away. Just as the night was falling, Liam spotted the long blue horse trailer coming down the road.

"They're back!" he exalted. "One of the horses wouldn't load. I'll nip at her heels and that way she will unload quickly."

"They're back," said Fay. "I'm so relieved. I didn't do anything wrong to keep them away."

"You're back," said Bailey. "I was so worried you wouldn't come back. And then you did."

"Of course we came back," said Matt to Bailey.

"We will always come back," said Kate.
