Late
summer 2003 at Mississippi View Farm, and the babies and their moms
have the run of the back pasture. The babies are getting older
and more venturesome. Their moms like to lunch together, as
moms do. Ok, let's be frank -- the mares think far more of their
grain at feed time than they do of their offspring. At this
stage it's not unknown for a mare to leave a baby behind in the
pasture (that's why we have humans bring them in, and not Liam,
though he's offered to). Here's what happened to Norie one
fine day...

Here
we
see two brown babies and three brown moms. The mares are heading
towards the barn. Gus and Glory are ahead. See that little
head popping up in the right-hand side of the picture? That's Norie,
getting distracted by something in the pasture...

The
mares discover there's feed out -- grain, and some of those yummy
alfalfa cubes. They pick up the pace, and Inspy even nips
at the boys to get them moving. Inspy, the protective mom
of just a few months ago, hasn't noticed that it's Angel, not Norie,
behind her.

Norie
realizes she's alone -- all alone! -- in the back pasture. |

She
squeals "wait for meeeeee!" as she gallops to catch up. Don't
worry, boys and girls….
